Northern Birch Credit Union was founded through the merging of the former Estonian & Latvian Credit Unions in Toronto. Brought together through the joint belief in caring for our members and our community, the two ethnic credit unions merged and became Northern Birch Credit Union as of January 1st, 2020. 

The name Northern Birch reflects our opportunity to bridge cultures, where north meets north. It represents the feeling of growth and sustainability. The birch tree is unique to the north, it is hardy and persistent. It often grows in a cluster, in groups scattered through northern forests - like a community. Our story is about being the architects of our own future. Our roots are strong and our culture is firmly rooted in trust. Northern Birch Credit Union puts our heritage and our community first.

Our Market Conduct Code

Credit unions are unique institutions. Operating in Canada for over 100 years, credit unions are financial cooperatives that are governed and financed differently than banks. At credit unions, members are shareholders. Being a member means sharing in the credit union’s success. Our primary motivation is providing quality products and services to our members. We are committed to ensuring that our members are completely satisfied with the level of services they receive.

This is our Market Conduct Code.


The Code recognizes the best practice principles we pledge to follow for soliciting, promoting, advertising, marketing, selling or distributing our products or services. The Code demonstrates our commitment to the fair treatment of all those who use our services. We believe in fair sales practices, comprehensive access to banking services, transparency and openness, and a reasonable approach to settling complaints. Individuals are entitled to the best possible care of their financial interests. We respect all our provincial regulatory obligations, and continually practice absolute excellence in consumer protection.

Northern Birch Credit Union Limited has established a framework for the effective handling and consistent resolution of matters arising from feedback from members, account holders, depositors, and other consumers in the forms of suggestions, complaints, and compliments.

This Complaint Handling Policy is a key component of the credit union’s code of market conduct.
